fall back...
life and playlist updates
This is probably the longest break I’ve had between posts. Although, if you include my co-post with Lish Grooves (not sure if that goes out to my subscribers though?) from last month, it hasn’t been that long. I’ve been busy with both work and music related activities. I DJ’d twice in NYC - at KCR’s GULI show and The Lot Radio. There will be full posts coming soon recapping those sets but you can watch them now at those links if you’re so inclined.
I’ve been inspired by a flurry of shows from the last couple of months - highlights include Cole Pulice, Laurel Halo, Toro y Moi, Alex G, DJ Python, Nourished by Time and Calycosa (Qur’an Shaheed’s jazz ensemble). My feelings on the Los Angeles dance music scene have also taken a positive turn. Over the weekend, I walked from one warehouse party to another - what a revelation! That’s all my updates so let’s get to some music.
therabeats (updated) + album recs
Spotify | Apple Music | YouTube
This playlist hasn’t been updated in a while and it ended up being a pretty fun mix starting out with electronic pop / r&b then moving into fully instrumental gems with a little Afro-House/Three-Step detour in the last third. Prime for a late night drive, after hours or maybe even a sunset bike ride.
If you dig, listen to… Leon Vynehall - In Daytona Yellow (Spotify / Apple Music)
On his latest album, Leon Vynehall trades in his often club-ready sound for moody alt-pop and he pulled it off quite nicely. If you’re looking for something to vibe to around the house, check out his recent RA “Avant & R&B set,” which features many of my fav artists…
If you dig, listen to… Speakman - Slate EP (Spotify / Apple Music)
Speakman are a brother duo from Glastonbury who I discovered fairly recently via Joris Voorn’s BBC Essential Mix. Their sound finds a nice balance between UK strains of bass music and bright, dreamy tones. It also reminds me a bit of the Future Bass / EDM Trap Soundcloud era. Particularly this one, which was my intro to their sound…
If you dig, listen to… John Tejada - The Watchline (Spotify / Apple Music)
John Tejada’s latest album is a bit of a new direction for him incorporating guitar and featuring dreamy, atmospheric ambient/trip-hop moments alongside excellent dub techno. It really is worth a listen from start to finish…
If you dig, listen to… Braga Circuit - Fall EP (Spotify / Apple Music)
Braga Circuit’s Fall EP is easily one of my favorite dance projects of the year. Some perfectly executed deep, hazy house with flawless vocal samples. I first discovered the project via this incredible remix from Leod…
If you dig, listen to… DJ Raff - Mareida Sound EP (Spotify / Apple Music)
London-based, Chilean producer DJ Raff has been a consistent source for some of my favorite remixes like the one below but I’ve also enjoyed his fully original projects, which fuse Latin American and African rhythms with electronic production.
RIP D’angelo. One of the all-time greats.
