the lot & kcr (on apple music!) sets and upcoming radio shows
Before I get into the GULI set, some housekeeping!
My Lot Radio episode is up on YouTube / Soundcloud. second wind (nazuk) and I did a joint post here if you want to check out a detailed tracklist and interview. Thanks to Nazuk for having me!!
This Saturday, midnight-2am I’m making my debut on dublab. Technically Sunday but it is Saturday night if that makes sense? I’ll post the archive if you’re not a night owl (or are out doing activities).
Next Thursday, 4-6pm I’m returning to BFF.fm in San Francisco. Will also share that archive!
December 13th We’re throwing a Karachi Community Radio GULI party in Los Angeles with a very sick lineup. Save the date, more details soon!
My September set from Karachi Community Radio’s GULI is up on both YouTube and Apple Music! As a longtime Apple Music user, that feels like a milestone. It’s hard not to listen back and zero in on slight imperfections but this was some of the most fun I’ve had DJing. The positive memories outweigh the insecurity. I’m not someone who experiences joy easily and this moment will stick with me for a very long time.
paths of discovery
You can buy most of the music from the set here and find the tracklist all the way at the bottom. As always, sharing some of my favorites from the set (and how I found em!)
Leod - “Untitled 07” [via Verraco’s RA Mix]
Techno is a very precise craft that, at its best, uses tiny variations to large effect. Enigmatic British DJ/producer Leod clearly understands the assignment. His Bandcamp profile is a treasure trove of minimal grooves with masterfully layered, organic percussion. I’ve already shouted out his remix of Braga Circuit’s “Filter Feed,” but this DJ mix is a great way to dig further into to his world.
Bianca Oblivian - “Move It” [via Clasico Records]
Bianca Oblivian has been around for quite some time and I had a chance to catch one of her eclectic sets opening for Jamie xx last year. This track from Clasico’s excellent Superclasico 2 compilation is designed to be a set centerpiece and was just that for me. Black Rave Culture actually played it too and I debated if it would be weird to play it a second time. I made the right choice.
While on the topic of both Clasico Records and Black Rave Culture, here’s a fantastic remix BRC member James Bangura made for their recent release from Closet Yi…
styn - “Bala Drumz” [via Coffintexts & Club Romantico Records]
I always appreciate percussion-driven moments in DJ sets. As soon as I heard this track from Dutch product styn, I knew I wanted to try it out. It provided a nice transition moment in my set. styn’s music fuses Dubstep and Techno sensibilities with Caribbean and Latin/Brazilian rhythms. Here’s another favorite from the same project…
Chris Guillotine - “Scatter” [via Verraco’s RA Mix]
I’m going to be honest, I still don’t fully understand what characterizes UK Funky but I do like everything that sites it as an influence. Chris Guillotine’s “Scatter” is so true to its name. When it drops, the track’s layers spread out over an enormous, distinctly UK bass line. This is the tune Verraco played in his RA set that led me to “Scatter.”
Sel.6 - Trio 99’ [via Impacto Records]
When Miami legends Nick León & Johnny From Space’s label drops their first release in a couple of years, I buy immediately. On Secular Music, fellow Miami mainstay Sel.6 delivers a hazy, heady set of music that makes for a great headphone experience without sacrificing club-readiness. “Trio 99’” is a great vibe transition track with plenty of heft to fit with techno but atmospheric enough to shift the energy. Jubilee, another Miami legend, closes out the EP with this wavy masterpiece…
Prayer - “Love Fantasy” [via Twitter replies]
A tad embarrassing to admit that I still use Twitter (I won’t call it by its new name). I follow so many music accounts on there that I haven’t been able to give it up quite yet. I came across a Tweet that was asking for tracks that combine dance music and shoegaze and found UK artist Prayer in the replies. His music combines breaks with gorgeous, ethereal layers. By 3:55am the club was pretty much empty besides my friends and we had 4 minutes of pure unbridled joy jumping around on stage. A perfect end to the night.
