the song: JGrrey - Drream ft. Zombie Juice
My music discovery tends to work in cycles — I’ll listen to, and discover, a bunch of new stuff then my ears will need a bit of a break. During these ear-blocks, I’ll listen to my pre-existing playlists or even podcasts. For some reason I feel guilty when I listen to anything but music. Usually a single song hitting at the right moment is enough to break me out.
“Drream” was that song a few weeks back. I had just gotten back to my hotel after a draining day of work and couldn’t fall asleep. I already dug “Drream” but in my dazed state it really hit the spot. The recurring vocal chop calls back to both boom bap and 90s trip-hop while JGrrey’s vocals represent the distinct strain of modern UK neo-soul. The raspy feature from Zombie Juice (of Flatbush Zombies) fits flawlessly.
how I found it: the UK soul/jazz/hip-hop scene!
In full transparency, this was a song pitched to me at my day job. But I will say that JGrrey is part of the UK’s flourishing soul/jazz/hip-hop scene that has been pumping out incredible artists like Jorja Smith, Enny, Lianne La Havas, Tom Misch, Laurence Guy, Yazmin Lacey, Goya Gumbani, Greentea Peng, Joe Armon-Jones, Poppy Ajudha, Oscar Jerome and Yussef Dayes to name more than a few.
Check them all out (+ JGrrey’s new mixtape If Not Now) if you dig this one!
