the song: ZeroFG - Godzilla Dub
Some samples are just timeless. This tid bit from the 1964 Godzilla vs. Mothra soundtrack by Japanese composer Akira Ifukube fits the bill. As far as I can tell, it was popularized by Pharoah Monch’s “Simon Says” and, ever since, has been used consistently as a conduit to the drop.
I was always partial to Kill Frenzy’s take but the above version from UK Garage producer ZeroFG might be the most electrifying I’ve heard yet. I’m generally fascinated by (albeit relatively ignorant to) the UK’s native genres of dance music and hip-hop. Along with a number of sub-genres of dance music, UK Garage has been seeping into contemporary pop production (see pinkpantheress or Interplanetary Criminal’s unexpected hit) as well as influencing some of my favorite upcoming DJs like salute and Swami Sound.
ZeroFG (who shares a name with an energy drink?) joins the latter category. Check out his Point of View EP for some more UKG goodness.
how i found it: Soundcloud!
In the height of my blogging days, SoundCloud was the source for rare music finds, both originals and remixes/edits. Nothing could quite beat the feeling of finding something with under 1k views and rushing to post it before anyone else did. As SoundCloud “matured,” it moved a bit further from DIY, free-for-all and more towards a standard music streaming service. I lost interest.
It’s hard for me to tell if the platform is having a bit of a renaissance right now or if I just so happened to tune back in recently. Regardless, it has become a solid source for DJ set material. The Soundcloud algorithm basically knows nothing about me so I’ve enjoyed clicking around at random and finding cool stuff or even just typing in the name of my favorite rap/pop song in search of the best dance edits (like this UKG one!).
What’s even more Soundcloud about this release is that it’s not actually available to download or purchase digitally anywhere online and, based on the comments, can only be heard in DJ sets from Skrillex and Interplanetary Criminal. I was able to find a limited vinyl release on Discogs but even that features a vocal version, which doesn’t hit the same. All this to say, the scarcity makes it even more alluring!
That mix was epic, I wish it was longer. The SoundCloud algo turned me on to this right after too and i think you’d dig it too - https://on.soundcloud.com/7rcsY
